An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 114

1996 Rover Mini Cooper - 35th Anniversary Edition
Factory fitted air conditioning

Registration - P49 HBC

Chassis No. - SAXXNNAYCBD129453

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 68,932

This interesting anniversary Mini is a 1996 Japanese export that was repatriated and UK registered in 2008, since when it has had a total of five keepers. The most recent of them informs us that ‘P49 HBC’ is one of only four red Anniversary Coopers in the country, and one of just 150 such models remaining worldwide. The car has been in his care for the last two years, during which time he has installed a long list of replacements and upgrades, including: RC40 exhaust system; K&N air filter; new fan and alternator belt; a pair of Red Spot suspension cones on the rear and Hi-Lo kit on the front; KYB dampers all round; new tie bars and bushes; new headlamp bowls and Quadoptic Halogen lamps; wheel rims powder-coated in black; new plain and locking wheel nuts; high level brake light; fresh set of Nankang tyres; steering wheel drop bracket and seat adjusters. He now considers the 1275cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, white over red paintwork and black leather interior trim to all be in ‘good’ order, and the bodywork to be ‘average’ – he volunteers that there are minor areas of rust ‘in the usual places’. He is now selling this special Mini complete with Sony radio/CD and a current MOT valid to February 26 next year.

The Mini’s association with the Cooper Car Company of F1 fame was formed in 1961, and for the next 10 years or so all performance versions of the little car bore the Cooper badge. Many rally and race successes were accrued before the relationship was shelved in the early 1970s. But you can’t keep a good name down, and it reappeared under Rover’s control almost 20 years later. The initial offering was actually a touch slower than the best of the ‘60s cars, but proved sufficiently popular that, from 1992, the Cooper Minis were fitted with a punchier, fuel-injected version of the 1275cc engine more worthy of the badge.

In summary:

  • One of only 150 35th Anniversary models remaining worldwide
  • A Japanese import recently equipped with a long list of upgrades
  • Five keepers and 68,932 miles from new
