The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 117

1972 VW Beetle 1303

Chassis No - E32260351

Registration - XPU 151L

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 29,500

Beetles still have a large and massively loyal following the world over, and it’s hard to imagine this lovely bright yellow example having any problem finding a new home. The vendor has retained it for the last 10 years, during which he has covered less than 2,000 miles in total, which at least partially accounts for the low registered mileage of 29,500. Though no longer in need of an MOT certificate, ‘XPU 151L’ does possess a Safety Certificate produced by an ex-MOT inspector now running his own VW specialist business – he also replaced the engine on the car a little while ago. The vendor says ‘the VW is in sound condition, and has had money spent on it to keep it that way, and I’m only parting with it and other vehicles as part of downsizing exercise’. He has apparently displayed the car quite regularly, which resulted in a ‘Best Beetle in Show’ award at the Tatton Park Power Show of 2018. The eye-catching yellow exterior is teamed with grey/black interior trim and the 1600cc engine drives through a four-speed manual gearbox.

From Europe’s perspective, the 1302/1303 ‘Super’ Beetles were the last of the breed. They featured the most radical updates imposed on the model during its amazingly long existence. These included MacPherson Strut front suspension which improved the handling and created more boot space and also permitted the fitment of front disc brakes. From 1972 the 1303 had a more safety-oriented padded facia and wraparound windscreen, plus larger tail lights. It was in this form that the immortal Beetle remained in production in Mexico as late as 2003, giving rise to a total production figure for the model of an astonishing 21,529,464 spread over 65 years.

In summary:

  • An apparently low mileage example, displaying 29,500 miles
  • Recent engine replacement
  • Former award winner
