An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 119

1999 Lotus Elise S1
Only 39,000 miles from new

Registration - V947 GBM

Chassis No. - SCCGA1114XHC37449

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 39,451

The proud owner of this very pretty Elise apparently searched for a long time to find a red example with such good paintwork, and has retained the car for the last six years. He informs us that the little Lotus is completely standard aside of a stainless steel exhaust system and K&N air filter. Evidently the car has only recently been treated to a professional brake overhaul that included: the installation of four genuine Lotus (Brembo) discs and Mintex M1144 pads all round; the calipers being rebuilt courtesy of kits from Eliseparts; the fitment of the same company’s stainless braided hoses all-round, since when the system has only been subjected to 25 miles’ worth of wear. Moreover, the current cam belt has only been in operation for 50 miles. We also understand from the vendor that ‘the Elise starts instantly whether hot or cold, has never let him down, and is an absolute joy to drive’. Unsurprisingly then he presently rates the four-cylinder K Series engine, five-speed manual transmission, fibreglass bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, the cream interior trim as ‘good’, and the feel from the refurbished brake system as ‘awesome’.

The Julian Thomson-penned Series 1 version of the Elise entered production in September 1996. Thanks to its deliberately low kerb weight, it was able to accelerate from 0-60mph in a supercar humbling 5.8 seconds, despite the relatively modest power output of 118bhp from its Rover K Series engine. A markedly low centre of gravity ensured the road-holding of this mid-engined two-seater was equally impressive. The car’s contemporary construction comprised a hand-finished fibreglass body mounted to a bonded extruded aluminium chassis. The Elise name was inspired by Elisa, the granddaughter of Romano Artioli, who was the chairman of both Lotus and Bugatti at the time of the Elise’s launch.

In summary:

  • A very pretty 39,800-mile example
  • Recently treated to a major brake overhaul and new cam belt
  • Totally standard aside of a stainless steel exhaust and K&N air filter
