Lot 12

1939 Triumph Speed-Twin

Registration - SSY 808

Chassis No. - TH5825

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 5,018

This truly stunning and incredibly original-looking Triumph was fully restored some 10 years ago, since when it has only been employed for participation in club events – the odometer currently stands at 5,018 miles. Resplendent in maroon paintwork that’s complemented by gold detailing, it would unquestionably grace any motorcycle collection and should have no trouble finding a suitably appreciative new home.

Having launched its inaugural motorcycle back in 1902, Triumph’s first adoption of the Tiger moniker occurred in 1937 on behalf of the single cylinder 247cc Tiger 70, 349cc Tiger 80 and 497cc Tiger 90. However, it was the Speed Twin of the same year, as per the sale bike, that first played host to Edward Turner’s 500cc parallel-twin masterpiece, a version of which was then used to power the first Tiger 100 of 1939 and, of course, countless other successful Triumphs that followed. Though not the first engine of its kind, it was lighter, narrower and most importantly far smoother than any of its contemporaries.

In summary:

  • An apparently immaculate example of a milestone model
  • Completely restored 10 years ago
  • Only used for club events since its rebuild
