February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 12

1939 Wolseley 14/60

Registration - FYR 119

Chassis - 3145135

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 64,845

This splendid six-light saloon was first registered in the early days of WWII and has been the subject of major refurbishment that was completed in August 2012. This included a complete respray in maroon and cream using two-pack paint and a total refresh of the interior. The seats and door cards were reupholstered in red-piped Dove Grey leather and all the woodwork restored to a self-evidently high standard. The sunroof was treated to a new frame and the headlining replaced. The Wolseley is powered by a-straight-six engine of 1818cc that drives through a four-speed manual gearbox. The car currently registers an unwarranted but perfectly credible 64,845 miles from new, and has certainly been enjoyed since the completion of the restoration work. Indeed, its first major rally occurred only a month later and was the Welsh Towns Run comprising over 300 miles of hilly terrain – a challenge it has subsequently successfully repeated a further five times. There have also been sojourns from Staffordshire to Devon, Bristol and the Isle of Wight, while in 2013 ‘FYR 119’ completed a trouble-free 1,780 mile trip through France and Spain. The vendor nowadays considers the engine, transmission, bodywork, paintwork and interior trim of this fine British classic to all be in ‘good’ order and is now offering this delightful car complete with auxiliary driving lights, flashing indicators, exterior rear view mirrors and bonnet mascot.

Introduced in 1938 as part of the Wolseley Series III range, the 14/60 shared its styling with 12/48 of the same period. Having ceased during war years, production recommenced in 1945 and ran until the model was surpassed by the 6/80 in 1948, by which time some 5,731 examples had been made.

In summary:

  • The subject of considerable refurbishment some 10 years ago
  • Very well presented inside and out
  • A successful participant in numerous demanding car runs
