November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 12

1953 MG TD

Registration - WEV 711

Chassis No. - TD27104

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 2000

This Primrose Yellow labour of love has been entered on behalf of a deceased estate. It was discovered by the late owner while on holiday with his wife in Manhattan, New York. A home market example that was first UK registered in May 1953, it was duly returned to our shores and roads exactly 51 years later and then treated to a decade-long restoration. This clearly much-treasured TD presents well, its summery bodywork being complemented by a beige hood, red interior trim and chrome wire wheels. The photos suggest the MG’s underside is almost clean enough to eat off and, following what appear to be very few miles since the completion of the restoration, the vendor considers the venerable XPAG engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ condition, and she is now offering ‘WEV 711’ complete with a full set of weather gear, chrome rocker cover, pancake air filters, badge bar and a pair of spotlights.

The first of the post-war MGs was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1250cc OHV XPAG engine that was common to the Morris 10 of the period. It was superseded by the TD in 1950 which, though visually quite similar to the earlier T Series cars, was built around a more modern chassis – the one derived for the Y-Type saloon. The benefits included coil spring suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering and smaller 15in road wheels. Some 30,000 TDs had been produced by the time the model gave way to the TF in 1953, all but around 1,600 or so of which were exported – some 23,500 went to the USA alone.

In summary:

  • Fully restored over a 10-year period
  • Being offered complete with full weather equipment
  • Benefits from a number of extras
