An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 121

1994 Mercedes-Benz SL 280
Only 26,000 miles from new and two former keepers

Registration - L550 JOL

Chassis No. - WDB1290582F092551

M.O.T. - October 2023

Odometer - 26,600

This handsome R129 Series Benz is understood to be a three-owner example that has covered just 26,643 miles from new. It has always been garaged since acquired by the vendor in April 2007, and matches Malachite Green bodywork to a black hood and cream hide upholstery, and rides on period-correct alloy wheels. The car appears to be remarkably original inside and out, and even retains the registration plates of its supplying dealer – Rycroft Stockton. The vendor presently regards the straight-six engine, automatic transmission, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order, and classes the convertible bodywork as ‘good’. He is now offering the SL complete with both soft top and colour-keyed hard top, owner’s wallet, handbook and a collection of old MOTs, plus a current one valid into October.

Mercedes have been producing an SL (Sport Leicht) model since 1954, when the landmark 300SL was unveiled. The second generation was distinguished by its lower waistline, big curved screens and a distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname of ‘Pagoda’. The larger, third generation SL was launched in 1971, while the fourth (R129 Series) was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show of 1989. It was a beautifully-engineered car that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features. The specification included independent suspension all round (double wishbone at the front/five link system at the rear), adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, integral roll-over bar and front air bags. A total of 213,089 R129s are understood to have been manufactured before the model was superseded by the R230 in 2001.

In summary:

  • A three-owner, 26,643-mile example – just 2,792 miles since 2013
  • In seemingly very good condition inside and out
  • Comes complete with both soft and hard tops, and current MOT
