An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

Lot 125

1984 Volkswagen Golf 1.3 CL Five-door

Registration - B425 YWN

Chassis No. - WVWZZZ19ZEW745864

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 58,000

There have been countless testaments to Volkswagen’s ubiquitous Golf over the years, and here’s another – a MKII example that’s 39 years old and covered 58,075 miles, yet looks as though it’s just been plucked from the assembly line. Finished in red and trimmed in grey cloth it appears totally original and unmolested, with no obvious signs of wear inside or out. It features the CL trim package and is powered by the optional 1.3-litre engine, the pre-1987 version of which had a quoted output of 49bhp. The gearbox is a four-speed manual one. This time warp saloon has had just two owners from birth, the most recent of whom has retained the car since 2016. He currently rates the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘excellent’ and the four-cylinder engine and aforementioned transmission as ‘good’. Doubtless with a tear in his eye he is now offering the VW for sale complete with factory-fitted sunroof, an impressive history file, and a current MOT valid for the next 12 months. What’s not to like?!

James May once described the Volkswagen Golf as ‘the only car that really needs to exist’, and for 49 years through no less than eight generations, and counting, it has been the small family car to beat. Launched in 1983, the second generation version was bigger overall than the original design and more rounded in shape. It was available with a range of engines from 1.0 to 2.0-litres, and in three or five-door hatchback guise. There were broadly four trim levels from which to choose – base, C, CL and GL. Worldwide sales of the MKII model had ultimately totalled 6.3 million units by the time it was supplanted by the MKIII variant in 1991.

In summary:

  • An immaculate two-owner, 58,075 example
  • Apparently unmodified and unmolested inside and out
  • Comes complete with sunroof, history and a fresh MOT
