The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 127

1979 Volkswagen T2 Camper

Registration - ARX 814T

Chassis No. - 2192064973

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 5,563

The demand for Volkswagen’s iconic Type 2 remains remarkably strong and it is hard to imagine ‘ARX 814T’ having any problem finding a suitably appreciative new home. A ‘bay window’ example from 1979, it is finished in white over a strident shade of yellow and rides on black-painted wheels. In recent times it has been treated to a decorative new poptop roof canvas and refurbishment of the bumpers. There has also been a degree of mechanical attention, during which the engine was fully rebuilt with 1641cc barrels, and new brake discs/pads and dampers installed. The specification includes a Westfalia interior trimmed in yellow, reclining bucket seats, leather rimmed steering wheel, night heater served by a discreetly placed diesel tank, and a 240V plug socket. The vendor presently classes the interior, engine and four-speed manual transmission as ‘good’ but the bodywork and paintwork ‘below average’. In summary he says that ‘the engine runs well and the van is solid underneath, but the paintwork is letting it down and the fuel gauge only works intermittently’.

The Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle was Type 1) has long since acquired cult status courtesy of such diverse celebrity owners as Jamie Oliver, Martin Clunes, Roger Daltry and Jenson Button. It has been home to generations of travelling Australians, helped hippies survive the ‘60s/‘70s and become the transport of choice for many a surfer. Variously available in van, bus, pick-up and camper guises, it would probably have been nicknamed the ‘car that changed the world’ if the Model T hadn’t got there first!

In summary:

  • The subject of an engine rebuild only three years ago
  • Recently treated to new brake discs/pads and dampers
  • Also comes with an eye catching new pop top roof canvas
