November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 128

1985 Volkswagen Beetle 1200

Registration - B162 CVP

Chassis No. - WVWZZZ11ZFM001427

M.O.T. - September 2022

Odometer - 34,429

So popular does the ubiquitous Beetle remain, that one sees these now ageing artefacts in all levels of survival from rust-ridden bangers to prize-winning collectors’ items. Happily, the sale car is much closer to the latter than the former, being a Mexican built example that’s apparently totally free of corrosion and never required the attention of a welding torch. Indeed, not only does it look good, but it apparently ‘drives nicely’ too. Finished in white that’s paired with black check cloth interior trim, the VW rides on white-painted wide-rim wheels and sports a factory-fitted Webasto sunroof, complete with windshield. According to Experian Autocheck, ‘B162 CVP’ has only had five keepers to date and currently displays an unwarranted but credible 34,429 miles from new. The vendor classes the flat-four engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ condition, and is now offering this trendy-looking specimen complete with V5C and a current MOT certificate valid to September 20 next year. An attractive proposition.

The story of the Volkswagen Beetle is like no other. In 1933, Hitler ordered Ferdinand Porsche to design and develop a ‘volkswagen’ (a people’s car). It needed to be a basic, affordable vehicle capable of transporting two adults and up to three children at speeds of up to 100kph (ie 62mph). The plan was to offer it to citizens of the Third Reich via a savings scheme. The newcomer finally went into production in 1938 and, while it inevitably evolved over the years (it is said to have benefited from 78,000 incremental changes), the basic concept was never altered – as enduring a tribute to the genius of Dr Porsche as he could have wished for.

In summary:

  • Mexican built and corrosion-free
  • A seemingly low ownership, low mileage example
  • Comes complete with factory-fitted Webasto sunroof
