March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction
1931 Ford Model A Coupe

We understand from the vendor that all major aspects of this handsome, late Model A Ford have been inspected within the last six months, and that any remedial work required has subsequently been carried out. It now features cast iron brake drums rather than the pressed steel originals and any worn items in the braking and steering systems have been renewed. The engine is said to ‘run well’ following attention to the distributor and carburettor (a later type from the Model B). The chassis is said to be in ‘very good condition’, as is the suspension and the wire wheels, which are shod with ‘almost new’ tyres that have travelled less than 200 miles. In summary, the vendor presently views the 3285cc four-cylinder engine, three-speed manual gearbox, coupe bodywork complete with dickie seat, cream over black paintwork and grey cloth interior trim as all being in ‘good’ condition. An altogether pleasing example of period Americana that comes complete with a new (but yet to be fitted) headlining.
The Model T phenomenon lasted 18 years, but by 1926 even Henry Ford had to admit that the car that ‘put the world on wheels’ had finally run out of steam. No follower of convention, he terminated T production on May 26, 1927 immediately after the 15 millionth example had rolled off the line, despite having nothing to replace it with. Henry himself directed the development of: a new longer, lower-slung chassis; a Howard Hicks-designed 3,285 cc, four-cylinder engine; three-speed manual transmission and novel electrical system. His son Edsel was appointed to mastermind a scaled-down version of the Lincoln he had guided to success. By the time the Model A made its debut on December 2, there was a backlog of 400,000 orders for a car nobody had seen. Nearly five million Model As were produced by the time the range gave way to the Model B in 1931.
