Lot 13

1955 Vincent Rapide

Registration - UYC 492

Chassis No. - RDR909

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 23,938

Vincent has long since been the marque of choice for a high percentage of discerning motorcycle collectors and good examples have been commanding ever higher prices for many years. ‘UYC 492’ is more than good, having had the benefit of a five-year long nut and bolt rebuild that was completed in 2012, since when its use has been limited to the occasional club event. The engine work alone represents an investment of £11,000 and it is hard to see how the condition of this splendid machine could be improved upon. Finished in Vincent’s trademark black, the Rapide wears its years and 23,938 miles with disdain. A wonderful opportunity for Vincent aficionados the world over.

Philip Vincent created his eponymous brand of motorcycle by purchasing the existing manufacturer HRD in 1928. The company’s now famous Phil Irving-penned Vincent V-twin engine first appeared in the Series A Rapide of 1936. The model progressed through B, C and finally D iterations, of which the sale motorcycle is an example. By the time of its manufacture in 1955, the post-war motorcycle boom had declined due to the advent of affordable new motorcars, and the company was sadly forced to close after little more than 500 examples had been made, making ‘UYC 492’ a rare as well as highly desirable motorcycle.

In summary:

  • A rare and highly desirable example of a much-vaunted model
  • The subject of a superlative five-year restoration, completed in 2012
  • Just 23,938 miles covered in 66 years
