Chassis - 2302002242

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 4,906

Production of Volkswagen’s immortal Type 2 (Type 1 was the equally eternal Beetle) began 72 years ago, yet popularity for the model in its many forms shows little sign of waning. The example on offer is a Westfalia Camper that was recently imported from South Africa. It has been the subject of considerable body refurbishment, during which accumulated nicks and dents were removed and a bare metal respray carried out. In order to prevent future corrosion, chromated primer preceded multiple layers of ordinary primer and the chosen colour of blue top coat, while the roof, bumper and badge were finished in Cloud White and the underside in red.

The effectively new 1600cc engine was completely rebuilt with: line-bored block, twin-port cylinder heads; brand new polished stage 1 C25 camshaft; polished and balanced crankshaft, conrods, flywheel and clutch pressure plate; and new piston rings. In addition, all painted parts within the engine bay were restored and all engine consumables renewed. The braking system and front suspension were fully refurbished and brand new wheels shod with a set of white wall tyres. Perhaps unsurprisingly the vendor now considers the engine, four-speed manual transmission, camper bodywork, paintwork and grey vinyl/plywood interior trim to all be in ‘excellent’ order. This very attractive Vee Dub is now ready for a new keeper to enjoy.

The Volkswagen Type 2 has long since acquired cult status courtesy of such diverse celebrity owners as Jamie Oliver, Martin Clunes, Roger Daltrey and Jenson Button. It has been home to generations of travelling Australians, helped hippies survive the ‘60s/‘70s and become the transport of choice for many a surfer. Variously available in Van, Bus, Pick-up and Camper guises, it would probably have been nicknamed the ‘car that changed the world’ if the Model T hadn’t got there first.

In summary:

  • The subject of a major body overhaul and respray
  • Engine rebuilt and uprated
  • Refurbished brake system and front suspension
