May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 13

1975 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow
Only 39,000 miles, offered with 12 months MOT. Finished in Peacock Blue with blue leather interior.

Registration - XCL 482

Chassis No. - SRH21411

M.O.T. - April 2023

Odometer - 39,500

According to Experian Autocheck, this very smartly-presented Silver Shadow has had just four keepers since it was first registered 47 years ago. Moreover, the vendor informs us that the currently indicated total mileage of only 39,500 is correct, and the car has apparently been dry stored for much of its life to date, while remaining rust free. Originally finished in blue and white with an Everflex roof, it is now presented entirely in Peacock Blue following a relatively recent restoration carried out by JSM Vehicle Solutions of Preston at a cost in excess of £14,000. Any mechanical work required has been handled by marque expert Chris Catterall and the vendor now regards the V8 engine, automatic transmission, bodywork, paintwork and blue hide interior trim as all being in ‘excellent’ order. Indeed, he goes so far as to suggest that the Rolls-Royce is in ‘close to concours condition and one of the best first generation Silver Shadows around’, and adds, ‘it starts first turn of the key, idles, then drops down to silence, is very comfortable to drive and will get you anywhere’. He is now offering the car complete with an extensive history file containing all previous MOTs, tax discs, the original owner’s manual and photos of the restoration.

The Shadow’s arrival in 1965 resulted in many firsts for the company, including: unitary construction rather than separate body/chassis units, disc rather than drum brakes and independent rear suspension. Though shorter and narrower than the Silver Cloud III it replaced, the John Polwhele Blatchley-penned newcomer nevertheless possessed greater space for both luggage and passengers and certainly boasted far more contemporary looks. The car’s famed ‘magic carpet’ ride was achieved courtesy of a high-pressure hydraulic system licensed from Citroën.

In summary:

  • The subject of a recent restoration and respray
  • Just 39,500 miles and four owners from new
  • Comes complete with comprehensive history file
