The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 13

1986 Austin Mini City E

Registration - C668 JRN

Chassis No. - SAXXL2S1020300787

M.O.T. - October 2022

Odometer - 2,400

The red bodywork of ‘C668 JRN’ is complemented by tan/brown check cloth trim and brown carpets. The vendor is the car’s eighth keeper, who has retained it for the last two years and considers it to be in ‘totally original condition inside and out’, with the exception of its smart Superlight alloy wheels (the original steel ones will be made available to the purchaser if required). He classes the upholstery as ‘excellent’ and A Series engine and four-speed manual gearbox as ‘good’, but the bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’, noting that ‘rust is starting to show’ in one or two places’. He says the car ‘has been fun’ (he took it the Goodwood Revival in 2019 with no issues), but he’s ‘not had much time to use it lately’, hence the sale. The odometer currently registers a mere 2,400 miles, so the speedometer has presumably been replaced at some stage and the true figure is currently unknown.

The classic Mini was a revolution on wheels, with an extraordinary level of accommodation for its size and an innovative rubber cone suspension system that helped endow the newcomer with go kart-like handling. Over 21 years the remarkable model progressed through no less than seven generations, and it was during the seven-year reign of the MKIV version that the base model of Sir Alec Issigonis’s ubiquitous baby was dubbed the Mini City. It was powered by a 998cc version of the A series engine that had an output of 41bhp, which was sufficient to propel the little car to 60mph in around 19.7 seconds and on to a terminal speed of some 84mph.

In summary:

  • An apparently totally original example
  • Excellent interior but a few patches of rust on the body
  • Rides on a smart set of Superlight alloy wheels
