The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 130

1978 Mercedes-Benz 230

Registration - BOD 113T

Chassis No. - 12302322109887

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 108,688

A handsome survivor of a much-vaunted model, ‘BOD 113T’ is finished in Midnight Blue and trimmed in grey cloth. It presently rides on genuine 17 inch AMG alloy rims, but the Benz also comes with a refurbished set of the original 14-inch Mexican Hat alloys, complete with centre caps. The vendor presently classes the 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine, three-speed automatic gearbox and upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘good, pointing out that while ‘the wheelarches and underside are solid, there are some tiny blemishes to the paintwork’. He further states that ‘the chromework is original and in good condition all-round, and all the controls and instruments are in full working order, as are the heater, vacuum-operated central locking system, heated rear window and clock. Recently replaced items include under-bonnet fuel lines, hoses and coolant, radiator cap and oil filler cap. The car is now being sold complete with: the original tool kit and warning triangle; jack; steel spare wheel; a selection of spares including a rear seat-belt set; some history of the work carried out over the years; original handbook; sales brochure; pair of keys, and a Haynes manual for the model.

Mercedes introduced the unitary, all steel four-door saloons from its new W123 model range in January of 1976. While there were some technical similarities to the W115 Series cars they replaced, the new models were longer in the wheelbase and slightly larger overall. Beautifully constructed, they continued to sell well until 1985, by when some 2.7 million examples had been produced, making them the most successful of all ‘three-pointed star’ models to that date.

Summary:

  • A solid tidy, example of the enduring W123 model
  • The subject of recent maintenance
  • Comes with two sets of wheels, some spares and a JVC audio system
