May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 14

1971 Volkswagen T2 Dormobile Camper

Registration - XUT 468J

Chassis No. - 2312126150

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 65,971

If you’re a fan of Patchwork Foods of Ruthin, North Wales (specialist pâtés and the like), then this T2 that once belonged to the company may well be familiar to you, as it apparently had its own Twitter page relating to its travels between UK food festivals. Following a change of ownership, it has just emerged from a comprehensive two-year restoration. Work on the body included the replacement of the inner and outer sills, all four wheelarches, the sliding door, all outriggers and jacking points, plus the front steps. The rejuvenated shell was then fully resprayed in its original livery of white over Baby Blue. The steel wheels were freshly powder coated and shod with new tyres, and the lights (including the ‘elephants foot’ rear ones), trims, rubbers, and pop-up roof windows were all replaced, and the rear of the interior recovered in flame resistant fabric. The camper’s extensive specification includes: fold-down front passenger seat; twin burner hob and gas connection; sink with electric pump and running water; 240V electrics with exterior socket; brand new leisure battery; and a 12V charging system operating both from the mains and the engine.

The vendor informs us that the 1.6-litre petrol engine ‘is beautiful and starts on the flick of the key’. He grades the powerplant, bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the four-speed manual transmission and blue upholstery as ‘good’. The currently indicated total mileage of only 65,971, though not warranted, is believed to be correct, and the vendor is now selling ‘XUT 468J’ complete with a large awning and many other camping accessories. A unique opportunity to not only own a well-restored and equipped T2, but one of Twitter fame!

In summary:

  • Freshly emerged form a two-year restoration
  • Currently registering just 65,971 miles from new
  • Had its own Twitter page in a former life
