This 2004 Ford Focus ST170, offered at No Reserve, is the favoured three-door version of the blue oval’s early noughties hot hatch, showing off the ‘new edge’ Focus design to its best. The black paintwork is complemented by black and blue cloth and leather upholstery. The vendor says the bodywork and paintwork aren’t great, due to it being sat under a tree for three months, but adds that it’s nothing major – and they describe the engine, transmission and electrics as ‘excellent’. ‘FN04NMM’ is said to drive really well with no mechanical issues, and it’s backed up by a full service history that’s a mixture of dealers and independents. Crucially for fast Ford collectors, this is a completely standard car with an odometer reading 89,000 miles, so is prime material for adding to a collection as the profile of the Ford Focus ST170 continues to build.
The Ford Focus ST170 was the spiritual successor to the famous 1980s Escort XR3i. Just as the Escort had an RS Turbo bigger brother, the ST170 was the sporty people’s car alternative to the extreme Focus RS. The 2.0-litre Zetec engine had a major makeover, with forged pistons, a new cylinder head, variable intake came timing and a free-flowing exhaust. It was paired with a six-speed Getrag gearbox, while chassis tuning further honed the Focus’ already brilliant handling. Style-wise, it was understated, marked out by 17-inch wheels on the outside and, inside, white-faced dials with an extra set of auxiliary dials mounted in a dashtop pod. While the Focus RS stole the headlines at the time, appreciation for the Focus ST170 is now growing all the time. They won’t remain this affordable for long.
