The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 144

1967 Ford Anglia Super V8

Registration - OPJ 917E

Chassis No. - BB26GL15858

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 500

‘OPJ 917E’ is a rather different Ford Anglia Super, having undergone a nut-and-bolt restoration to create something which appears to be very special indeed – a powerful little competition-prepared wolf in sheep’s clothing which we are told has just 500 miles on the clock.

Registered in May 1967, this top-of-the-range Super variant was one of just 500 built in the final months of Anglia production that were originally painted Venetian Gold, a colour Ford was experimenting with. It has been in the same ownership for the last 23 years and is now light years away from the car that rolled off the Halewood production line.

The 1198cc engine has been replaced by a 3.5-litre V8 Rover unit, with Edelbrock 1404 Performer carburettor and Mocal remote oil filter kit. An LT77 gearbox from a Rover SD1 has been installed, together with Sherpa V8 remote linkage and a rear limited-slip differential with a ratio of 3.54:1. Suspension upgrades include adjustable gas struts on the rear and coilovers from a Mk2 Escort on the front.

‘OPJ 917E’ now features a brake servo, front disc brakes with vented M16 calipers and rear disk brakes with Milton conversion kit, Ford Fiesta discs and Ford Granada calipers. It also has a Milton pedal box with brake bias adjustment between front and rear brakes. A quick rack and pinion kit from a Mk2 Escort has been installed, along with an electric radiator cooling fan, Facet electric fuel pump and PerTronix electronic ignition. An aluminium petrol tank has been fitted in the boot. All engineering and mechanical work has been carried out by MDA Motorsport.

The Venetian Gold paintwork has been replaced by Porsche Arrow Blue, with Ford Frozen White roof and side flashes. Fibreglass boot, bonnet and front wings have been fitted, along with a Safety Devices roll cage, B-G quick-release steering wheel, multi-speed windscreen wipers and new instruments, including Smiths speedometer and tachometer. Mazda MX-5 front seats have been installed and the battery relocated to the boot. The car now sits on chrome rostyle wheels and new 165/80R13 tyres. The rear windows have been tinted and a Thatcham alarm fitted.

In summary:

  • A late-model Ford Anglia Super which has undergone a professional nut and bolt restoration to create a potent competition machine
  • 3.5-litre Rover V8 engine and a host of other performance components
  • Presented in ‘excellent’ condition by its owner of the past 23 years, and with a declared mileage of just 500
