The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 145

1988 Honda Civic CR-X 1.6i-16

Registration - F100 XUM

Chassis No. - JHMED93700S007202

M.O.T. - May 2022

Odometer - 72,091

This three-owner from new CR-X has been cherished - regularly serviced and tucked away in a garage for six months of the year, to protect it from the British wet weather and salty roads. ‘F100 XUM’ is a highly collectable example of the desirable second-generation CR-X which the vendor – who has owned it for the past ten years - tells us is presented in generally excellent condition. Insurance records show it recorded as a loss resulting from damage in May 1996, but its current ‘excellent’ condition indicates that it was restored to good order. The declared mileage of 72,091 would appear to support the assertion that this has been a good-weather car.

Launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983, the Civic-based Honda CR-X carved its own niche; not a hot hatch but not really a sports coupé. From the start, the well-respected Honda engines and lively handling attracted a strong following. These were sporty, fun cars backed by Honda reliability and build quality.

The arrival of the second-generation version in 1986 boosted the model’s reputation considerably, not least because of the new engine range, which added the power the first generation lacked. Now with uprated suspension, an alloy block, hollow camshaft and special, light valves, it could take on the hot hatches. In spite of its popularity, the CR-X wasn’t produced in huge numbers, making them even more collectable today.

‘F100 XUM’ features Honda’s 16-valve 1.6-litre engine, which produces 125bhp, a five-speed manual gearbox and pinstriped seats with CR-X stitched logo – all very 1980s and all adding to the charm. As the eye-catching graphics on the doors indicate, this car also features Honda’s PGM-F1 electronic programme fuel injection system.

In summary:

  • Three owners from new – a rare, cherished vehicle
  • Well-presented example of the desirable second-generation CR-X with low declared mileage
  • An eye-catching, sporty car with lively handling – lots of fun!
