The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 149

1963 Triumph TR4

Registration - ATL 419A

Chassis No. - CT18626L

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 83,244

This bright red 1963 convertible offers a cost-effective entry to TR4 ownership – with an Italian twist. ‘ATL 419A’ has been fitted with a 2-litre Fiat Twin Cam engine and we are told starts and drives well. The vendor describes the engine as ‘excellent’, and the Fiat Twin Cam certainly has a lot of fans. However, should the new owner wish to fit a TR4 unit they are readily available.

The car has also received a five-speed gearbox and has benefited from a new hood and carpets Presented in red with black leatherette trim, it has the early TR4 metal dashboard and traditional steel wheels, complete with four good tyres. Bodywork is described as good, through the vendor advises that there are slight signs of pitting on the edge of the driver’s door. The declared mileage is 83,244.

Launched in 1961 and costing £1032, Triumph’s rugged little TR4 was 12” longer than the TR3. It was also more comfortable to travel in, with a roomier cabin and face-level vents, while the bigger boot made it a more practical sports car and wind-up windows replaced side curtains. Rack and pinion steering, wider track and full synchromesh on all forward gears were also included in Michelotti’s new design, together with a distinctive bulge on the bonnet to accommodate the SU carburettors of the early models and the Strombergs fitted from 1963 onwards.

Options included wire wheels, servo brakes and an innovative hard top with integral rollbar and removable steel centre panel. While the standard engine was 2138cc, a 1991cc unit was available as a no-cost option to make the car eligible for under two-litre racing classes. Some 40,000 TR4s were built between 1961 and ’67. Most of these were for the export– with the USA being the strongest market. Fewer than 1,200 now remain in the UK.

In summary:

  • A cost-effective entry into TR4 ownership
  • Powered by a 2-litre Fiat Twin Cam engine
  • New carpets and hood, declared mileage of 83,244
