November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 15

1961 Rover P4
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - BJT 154A

Chassis No. - 650101816

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 69,113

Nowadays best-known for bringing us the ubiquitous Land Rover, The Rover Company also produced a succession of fine quality passenger cars before it was swallowed up by the Leyland Motor Corporation in 1967, of which P4 models such as ‘PJT 154A’ are a welcome reminder. Finished in light over dark grey and trimmed in red leather, it retains an aura that’s missing from the majority of more modern tin boxes. Dry stored for the last six years, the 100 is accompanied by a 25/2/16 invoice for £2,469 covering a full service, overhaul of the braking and electrical systems, renewal of the fuel lines and flushing of the tank, a degree of general mechanical and electrical work and the fitment of a new set of tyres, since when the car has travelled less than 100 miles. The vendor currently describes the straight–six engine, four-speed manual gearbox, four-door bodywork and two-tone paintwork as ‘good’ and the well-patinated upholstery as ‘average’. He is selling the venerable Rover complete with some history, the receipt for the last bout of maintenance, the most recent MOT (2017) and the car’s original toolkit. The odometer presently stands at a very credible 69,113 miles from new.

Launched in 1949, the distinctive Phil Armstrong-designed Rover P4 family of four-door saloons remained in production until 1964. They featured a separate chassis, all but the last of which were clothed in aluminium. With the exception of the ‘80’ models, all versions were powered by examples of the overhead inlet/side exhaust valve (F head) engine first seen in the P3. In 1959, the range was reduced to two models – the four-cylinder ‘80’ and six-cylinder ‘100’.

In summary:

  • Presented in good order following six years of dry storage
  • Just seven keepers and 69,113 miles from new
  • A pleasing reminder of Rover quality prior to its BL days
