March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 15

1973 Ford Escort MKI
Completed only 300 miles since build

Registration - ATF 853L

Chassis No. - BBATNB02546

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 300

It is clear that a great deal of time and investment have gone into turning what started life as a humble 1300 XL Escort into a mint competition car, that has apparently travelled under 300 miles since the transformation was completed. The car is finished in white throughout and rides on wide-rim Minilite style wheels that are housed below suitably extended wheelarches. Other external upgrades include sill-mounted jacking points, mudflaps front and rear, 1300 GT-style quarter bumpers, bonnet pins and Mexico badges. Inside can be found a full FIA roll cage, pair of (in-date) OMP bucket seats with four-point harnesses, RMD deep-dished steering wheel, internal brake and fuel lines, and hydraulic handbrake. The boot houses a suitably-caged alloy fuel tank and filler, competition fuel pump and battery, while the under-bonnet area is dominated by a 1700cc Kent Crossflow engine equipped with a pair of twin-choke Weber carburettors, fabricated exhaust manifold and Vulcan alloy rocker cover – a strut brace is also evident. Hidden from sight are a 9” steel back axle with limited slip differential and MKI Mexico Rocket gearbox. The vendor of this apparently pristine machine presently grades the engine and transmission as ‘excellent’, and the bodywork, paintwork and interior trim as ‘good to excellent’. A unique and exciting proposition.

Competition versions of the MKI Escort were international winners in their day, and examples are now a force to be reckoned with in classic rallying and racing events. Genuine AVO and Boreham-built cars are increasingly hard to come by, and expensive when they do come to market, so it makes eminent good sense for enthusiasts to create their own weapons of choice, which is exactly why the sale car was turned from a cooking saloon into a serious rally car.

In summary:

  • Fully rebuilt to rally specification less than 300 miles ago
  • Presented in apparently immaculate order throughout
  • Features a 1700cc Crossflow engine, Rocket gearbox and LSD
