Any E28 BMW 5 Series is now a rare collectable – but this Hartge H5SP is even rarer and more collectable still! A UK-supplied right-hand-drive vehicle, it was ordered as a 528i from BMW dealer Sewell (now Barons Group 1 of Stansted) by a company director on 1 September 1984. Prior to delivery, it was delivered to UK Hartge concessionaries, Griffin Motorsport in Swindon, which carried out the H5SP conversion. This included a 268bhp M30 engine upgrade, enhanced suspension and interior, plus the distinctive Hartge bodykit and decals. Supporting all this is an original handbook with stamped history by Sewell up to April 1986, when the Bates BMW dealer took over.
‘B888WWC’ is finished in Alpine White with a grey cloth interior. The vendor describes its condition as ‘excellent’ throughout, and it has an MOT until September 2025. The odometer currently reads around 189,400 miles.
We’re told ‘B888WWC’ had just two owners up to 1992, with the third owner keeping up to 2011 – the last 15 years of which it was stored in a barn. Once they acquired it, the new owner sent it to Fritz’s Bits of Wellington, Somerset for restoration. This proved to be more complicated than anticipated, with the car completing very few miles in the following decade as various parts and subassemblies were either restored or replaced. Records show a total of 477 hours of work done, with a further three pages of parts itemised – including a full engine rebuild. The BMW Hartge H5SP was then recorded as SORN between 2018 and 2021. The vendor acquired it in May 2022
Hartge was a German tuning house founded in 1971 in Merzig. It specialised in BMWs and was known for producing distinctive, eye-catching cars with significantly more power than standard. Its products were developed to such a high standard, it was granted manufacturer status in 1985. Today, Hartge models are real collector’s items by BMW enthusiasts.
