The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

Lot 150

1972 Jensen Healey MK1

Registration - HDC 536I

Chassis No. - 10161

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 45,000

‘HDC 536L’ is one of just 14 British Racing Green Mk1 Jensen-Healeys to come out of the West Bromwich factory. It has undergone a full restoration including bodywork, engine and interior. The history file contains receipts for more than £14,000 worth of work, and the vendor describes the car’s condition as ‘excellent’.

This smart convertible has retained many of its original components and is a fine example from the first year of production of Donald Healey’s venture with Jensen, which he embarked upon after his 20-year partnership with Austin came to an end. Jensen-Healey chassis numbers started at 10000, and this is number 10161. It has a declared mileage of 45,000.

The Jensen-Healey was the first production car to be powered by the new, all-aluminium, 140bhp, 2-litre DOHC Lotus 907 engine. Models destined for the British and European markets had dual side-draft Dell'Orto carburettors. Mk1 models had a Chrysler transmission, and suspension based on that of the Vauxhall Firenza. The early examples had austere black plastic centre consoles, as seen on ‘HDC 536L’.

Despite its Healey heritage, class-leading acceleration and what was generally acclaimed as excellent handling, the Jensen-Healey didn’t achieve the level of popularity one might have expected, with early engine reliability issues proving problematic. Nevertheless, it was Jensen’s best-selling model. 10,503 were produced between 1972 and 1975. The majority went to the USA and 2020 into the British market. 3349 Mk1 cars were built.

246 Jensen-Healeys were licensed in the UK in the first quarter of 2021, and a further 182 were SORN. Today these rare sports cars have a dedicated following.

In summary:

  • A fully-restored, early example of this rare, collectable model
  • Receipts document more than £14,000 worth of work
