  Lot 16

1967 Austin Mini-Cooper S Tribute

Registration - ETJ859F

Chassis No. - AA2575978030

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 87,661

With genuine Cooper Ss now fetching previously unimagined prices, its small wonder that enthusiasts are creating lookalikes from more lowly models. This smartly-presented example started life as a standard 848cc Mini to which a later 998cc engine has been fitted, together with: reverse rim Cooper-style wheels, a second fuel tank (not currently connected), later steering column/lock, and the full range of Cooper S items of body trim. The work dates back some 10 years, and was part of a restoration during which any welding required was carried out, the Mini resprayed from black to the classic Cooper livery of Old English White over Almond Green, and the interior refurbished in green vinyl. The vendor now describes the Austin as ‘a perfectly good, very presentable car but with room for improvement’, and currently grades the A Series engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘good’ order.

As a result of the Suez crisis, Britain found itself back on petrol rationing by 1956. BMC’s Leonard Lord recognised the urgent need for a small car with ground-breaking economy, and within a year a prototype had been built and what’s now known as the Mini was launched just two years later. The first Cooper version was launched in 1961. Engine capacity was increased from 848 to 997cc which, together with other improvements, raised output from 34 to 55bhp. A closer ratio gearbox and front wheel disc brakes completed the package. Next came the shorter stroke 998cc Cooper of 1964 and three versions of the more powerful Cooper S, with 970, 1071 and 1275cc engines respectively.

In summary:

  • ‘ETJ 859F’ started life as a standard 848cc MKI model
  • The subject of a restoration some 10 years ago
  • Exterior modified to emulate that of a Cooper S
