March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 16

1991 Lotus Elan M100 SE Turbo

Registration - H943 HVT

Chassis No. - SCC100ZT1MHD16556

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 104,430

This tidy M100 is of the desirable SE Turbo specification and was obtained new by a gentleman in Stockport from the Stratton Motor Company on December 13 1990, and first registered 20 days later. Its Calypso Red fibreglass bodywork is complemented by red-striped dark grey leather interior trim. There have been seven subsequent keepers, the most recent of whom acquired the little Lotus in March 2017. It seems neither he nor the previous owner put the car to much use for, despite a total mileage to date of 104,430, he informs us that only 15,000 of those have been added in the last 17 years. He presently considers the Isuzu turbo engine, five-speed manual gearbox, two-seater bodywork and paintwork to all be in ‘excellent’ order and the upholstery to be ‘good’. He is now offering the car complete with HiSpec Motorsport uprated front brakes, Alpine stereo unit, electric windows, central locking, a selection of invoices, the original bill of sale, and a current MOT valid to February 21 next year.

Being a small, fibreglass-bodied two-seater constructed over a rigid steel chassis, the M100 certainly conformed to the general philosophy of Lotus’s late founder, Colin Chapman. The major departure was the use of frontwheel drive – a configuration not employed by Lotus before or since. At launch, the pretty newcomer was described by Autocar as ‘the quickest point to point car available’. The newcomer was powered by a Lotus-modified 1,588 DOHC Isuzu unit. Most customers opted for the SE model that featured a 162bhp turbocharged version of the engine and power steering as standard. Autocar’s test of the SE achieved an impressive 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 137mph. By the time production of the Elan ceased in 1992 some 3,855 examples had been delivered from the Hethel factory.

In summary:

  • A well-presented eight-keeper, 104,430-mile example
  • Just 15,000 miles added in the last 17 years
  • MOT’d to February 21 next year
