September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 17

1934 MG PA
Featured in 'The Classic MG' by Richard Aspen

Registration - MG 3644

Chassis No. - PA1575

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This delightfully-presented five-owner PA was the subject of a nut and bolt restoration back in the ‘90s which, among many other things, included the installation of a new body tub, upholstery and wiring loom. Though still looking good today, it has apparently driven a total of just 3,000-4,000 miles in the last 15 to 20 years, so would arguably now benefit for a degree of light recommissioning. Resplendent in a pleasing shade of mid blue and trimmed in blue leather, it is currently considered by the vendor to have ‘excellent’ bodywork and upholstery, ‘good’ paintwork, and ‘average’ engine and four-speed manual transmission. The MG apparently has a degree of racing pedigree and Richard Aspden’s book ‘The Classic MG’ features a photograph of it on track. ‘MG 3644’ is now offered complete with full weather equipment and a degree of history, including some original factory notes regarding a change of chassis.

The P Type Midget was launched in March 1934 and boasted 100 improvements over its predecessor. For example, it was powered by an all-new 847cc SOHC engine of 36bhp, which was sufficient to propel the lightweight two-seater to 60mph in 32.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 76mph. The four-speed non-synchromesh gearbox was strengthened and improved to cope with this new level of power, and the brake drums increased in size from eight to 12 inches in diameter for the same reason. The front suspension included Hartford friction dampers while the rear featured transversely mounted hydraulic units and the newcomer rode on centre-lock wire wheels. A total of 1973 MG PAs were made before the model was supplanted by the incoming PB.

In summary:

  • The subject of a nut and bolt restoration in the ‘90s
  • Has travelled a mere 3,000-4,000 miles since the rebuild
  • Featured in the ‘The Classic MG’ by Richard Aspden
