The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 17

1971 Rover 3500
Only 30,000 miles

Registration - LBJ 580K

Chassis No. - 45110144/B

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 30,513

Rover’s P6 model was way ahead of its time, as confirmed by this notably tidy 3500 example, the sharp lines of which put most of today’s tin boxes to shame. Remarkably original inside and out, it has had only five owners from new, who’ve amassed a mere 30,513 miles between them. The uncommonly low figure stems from the car being held in storage from the early 1980s until recommissioned by the previous keeper in 2016, who then kept it in a heated garage. Equipped from new with automatic transmission, its lustrous red bodywork is complemented by cream leather interior trim. The vendor informs us that the car was treated to a repaint and fresh brightwork as recently as 2019, and this fine example of a revered mark is now offered complete with: power assisted steering; Kenlowe electric fan; original Radiomobile pushbutton radio, Rover passport, registration book and owner’s manual; and a selection of old MOTs and invoices.

Introduced in 1963, the Rover P6 was designed in-house by Spen King, David Bache and Gordon Bashford. Bristling with innovation inside and out, it was quite rightly declared the winner of the first ever European Car of the Year Award. Its monocoque shell featured bolt-on panels for ease of repair and the model was initially powered by a 1,978cc four-cylinder unit (hence its 2000 name). The 3528cc V8-engined version that gave rise to the 3500 moniker was offered from 1968. An automatic example tested by Motor magazine achieved the 0-60mph dash in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 117mph. Some 322,302 P6s of varying capacity were produced before the model was superseded by the SD1 in 1977.

In summary:

  • A handsome and very original example
  • Just 30,513 miles and five owners from new
  • Repainted and rechromed as recently as 2019
