The Citroen DS was a breathtakingly futuristic car when it was launched in 1955. Not only did the Bertoni design look like a spaceship but it was awash with mechanical innovations, most notably its pioneering hydropneumatic suspension. ‘GEL368L’ is a DS Special dating from 1972 and comes from an 18 year period of current ownership. ‘GEL 368L’ was imported to the UK in 1998 and has been cherished by four previous UK keepers. Despite having been MOT exempt for many years, the last MOT expired in June 2024, and this was an advisory free pass. Extensive supporting paperwork is also included. Presenting in a charming pale yellow hue, close to its original AC084, ‘GEL 368L’ is offered here with NO RESERVE.
‘GEL 368L’ is awash with original gallic charm with its pale yellow livery, white roof panel and accompanying chrome accents. The faired in rear wheels only adds to its “hovering spaceship” demeanour, especially when the hydropneumatics are set to the lowest position. The steel wheels are trimmed with shiny chromed hub caps and the fared in quad headlamps are a key DS feature. The spacious salon cabin of ‘GEL 368L’ is no less futuristic than the exterior and is finished in Citroen’s Targa, faux leather upholstery in brown (fauve). The cabin is fully carpeted, too. The speedometer has been converted to miles per hour. The bodywork, paintwork and interior are all rated as “good.”
‘GEL 368L’ is a 1,985cc, four cylinder, five-bearing wet-cylinder petrol version of the DS with a four speed manual gearbox. The DS had a computerised 1-2-3 ignition was fitted to ‘GEL 368L’ when the current keeper first acquired it. The rear suspension has been renewed to completely eliminate the usual ticking that occurs as the pressure spheres fill. A new exhaust has also recently been fitted. A number of useful spare parts are included with painted rear wings and a new fuel tank amongst them. All mechanical systems of ‘GEL 368L’ are rated as “good.”
