November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 17

1976 Mercury Capri 2.8 Ghia

Registration - PFE 548P

Chassis No. - GAECPA29357

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 40,500

At first sight this very smartly-presented lefthand drive Capri will look very familiar to UK drivers, though further inspection reveals the little details that distinguish the Capri II model marketed in America by Ford’s Lincoln-Mercury Division between 1976 and 1978 from its UK market cousins. Visual clues include quad circular headlights rather than a pair of rectangular ones, grille-mounted indicator lights and colour-keyed door mirrors. As standard it would have ridden on Rostyle wheels, though here the sale car differs still further by wearing a handsome set of extra wide black-centred aftermarket alloys with polished rims. The main distinction, however, lies under the bonnet, ‘PFE 548P’ being powered by an example of the Cologne-built 2.8 V6 engine that was not fitted to UK specification cars until the 2.8i model of 1982.

The vendor informs us that all the federal emissions equipment has been removed from the engine and a new stainless steel exhaust installed. And, while the very tidy engine bay is apparently original, the rest of the car was treated to a repaint in white 12 years ago. As recently as two years ago the vinyl roof was replaced, along with the carpets and battery. He says the Capri is 99 percent rust free and never been welded, and presently classes the engine, automatic transmission and coupe bodywork as ‘excellent’ and the paintwork and tan cloth interior trim as ‘good’. It is certainly a well-equipped example, and comes complete with a factory-fitted tilt/slide sunroof, power steering, air-conditioning, Audiovox radio/cassette and large file of paperwork, plus its original handbooks. First UK registered in 2019, ‘PFE 548P’ has had only two keepers since it was imported and presently displays a total mileage of 40,500.

In summary:

  • A very smartly-presented American specification Capri II
  • Comprehensive specification includes power steering, air conditioning and sunroof
  • Vinyl roof, carpets, exhaust and battery all replaced in 2020
