September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 18

1947 MG TC
Delightfully original with some sympathetic upgrades.

Registration - UXS 380

Chassis No. - TC3300

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This apparently very original TC was repatriated from the USA shortly before being purchased by the vendor three years ago. Though confident that the car has never been subjected to a full restoration, he believes its engine has been rebuilt and the interior suitably refreshed at some stage, while as recently as 2020 he rewired the MG and installed a new control box. The car has also been treated to a few sympathetic upgrades – for example the lever arm dampers have been replaced by telescopic ones and the original steering box supplanted by one from a Datsun Cherry. Silver-painted wire wheels, red radiator slats and a beige tonneau cover nicely complement the MG’s black bodywork and black interior trim, and the vendor presently classes the XPAG engine, four-speed manual transmission and upholstery as ‘good’ and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘average to good’. The venerable TC is now available for sale complete with Boyce MotoMeter, chrome badge bar, current V5C and a selection of old invoices.

The TC featured the familiar dual-cowl dashboard, fold-flat windscreen, cutaway doors, swept wings and rear mounted spare wheel of its TB predecessor. The major change was the welcome 4-inch increase in cockpit width. Other refinements included: improved sidescreens, a bulkhead-mounted 12-volt battery, hydraulic lever arm dampers and superior mountings for the semi-elliptic leaf springs. Power came from MG’s proven 1250cc OHV XPAG unit mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. A slight rise in compression ratio lifted the power output to 54.4bhp, endowing the TC with a top speed of almost 80mph. Though only available in RHD, the model was exported worldwide, with 10,000 examples produced before it was replaced by the TD in 1950.

In summary:

  • A largely original example recently repatriated from the USA
  • Has benefited from an engine rebuild and interior refresh
  • Features a number of sympathetic upgrades
