1954 Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire 346 MKI

Registration - SWB 838

Chassis No. - 342865

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 66,225

If you run a wedding hire fleet, then you may well wish to add this gorgeous-looking Armstrong Siddeley to your line-up. A rare survivor of a great British marque, it comes in the appropriate colour of Old English White that’s teamed with burgundy leather upholstery and red carpets. It has been part of a private collection for the last 15 years, during which time it has been lovingly restored and served as a wedding and show car. It retains its original in-line six-cylinder engine that’s mated to a pre-selector gearbox. The vendor informs us that the bodywork has benefited from considerable restoration, and that the interior also been extensively revitalised whilst retaining as much originality as possible – the latter work included the refurbishment of the seats, replacement of the carpeting and re-lacquering of the door caps. The engine’s single carburettor has been overhauled by a specialist, the distributor equipped with Aldon electronic ignition for instant starting, and a percentage of the exhaust system upgraded to stainless steel. The car even still boasts its original (working) valve radio and semaphore trafficators, as well as the distinctive radiator emblem (a sphinx sandwiched between two Meteor jet engines – the latter being a nod to Armstrong Siddeley’s involvement in the aviation industry), and a chrome badge bar. This is a car that would surely grace any classic collection.

Armstrong’s 346 model was manufactured from 1953 to 1958, during which 7,697 examples were built. A second carburettor was optional, which raised output of the 3435cc engine from 125 to 150bhp. The Wilson pre-selector gearbox (as fitted to the sale car) was also an option, for which the manufacturer demanded an extra £30. The twin carburettor 346 tested by Motor magazine in 1953 achieved the sprint from 0-60mph in exactly 13 seconds and a top speed of 100.1mph.
