The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 18

1989 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - G991 TVO

Chassis No. -

M.O.T. - June 2022

Odometer - 147,000

With their torquey engines, and excellent electrically-operated hoods, 944 cabriolets are perfect fun transport for the British summer. This particular example is finished in metallic grey and trimmed in black leather. The vendor describes it as ‘a good usable car’ and presently classes the 3.0-litre engine, five-speed manual gearbox and electrical system as ‘excellent’, and the soft-top bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. According to Experian Autocheck, the Porsche has had 18 owners to date, who between them have amassed a total of 147,000 miles. The check also notes that the car was declared as insurance Category C back in 2001. It is now offered complete with power assisted steering, front fog lights and a large history folder of invoices (mainly from Porsche main dealers and Porsche specialists) and old MOTs.

Introduced in 1982, Porsche’s front-engined, rear-wheel drive 944 was a direct development of the 924. The company replaced the latter’s Audi engine with their own four-cylinder unit of 2.5-litres which, despite having few common parts, was effectively half of the 5-litre V8 that powered the 928. Other significant changes included wider wheel arches, a better equipped, more refined interior and upgrades to the suspension and brakes. From the outset, the model boasted excellent handling - the specification of a rear transaxle endowing the 944 with nigh on 50/50 distribution. The 944 S2 saw the light of day in 1989, by which time the normally aspirated engine had grown via 2.7 to 3.0-litres in capacity. There were now two body styles to choose from – coupe and cabriolet. A total of some 4,000 cabriolets were produced before the 944 model range was superseded by the 968 in 1991.

In summary:

  • Comes complete with large history file of invoices, MOTs etc
  • Said to have an excellent electric hood and four good tyres
  • Classified as insurance Category C in 2001
