Few cars have had quite the impact of the original Mini, and the arrival of the Cooper transformed Alec Issigonis' ingenious small car into one of Britain's most recognisable sporting icons.

This 1962 Morris Mini Cooper is a particularly appealing early example, being the desirable Mk1 fitted with the 997cc engine. First registered on 15 June 1962, it dates from the formative years of Mini Cooper production and retains the unmistakable appearance that made these early cars so distinctive.

Finished in red with a contrasting black roof, TSJ 162 displays all the charm of an early Mini, with its compact proportions complemented by chrome bumpers, traditional grille, external door hinges, sliding side windows and period-style steel wheels with chrome hubcaps.

Inside, the wonderfully simple cabin is equally evocative. The central instrument binnacle, large thin-rimmed steering wheel and straightforward switchgear capture the minimalist character of the early Mini, while the contrasting red and light-coloured upholstery adds further period appeal.

Importantly, the vendor informs us that the car's previous owner acquired it in 2001, giving it a notably long period of ownership. The odometer currently displays approximately 41,000 miles.

The accompanying paperwork is another welcome feature. A current V5 registration document is present, together with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, previous V5 documents, historic MOT certificates, V11 tax reminders, invoices and a copy of CooperWorld Magazine. The Heritage Trust certificate in particular provides a useful addition to the history file of an early Cooper such as this.

As the photographs demonstrate, this is not presented as a concours example. The bodywork would benefit from attention in a number of areas, with age-related deterioration, corrosion and imperfections visible around sections of the body. We would therefore encourage prospective bidders to study the comprehensive photography and inspect the car in person where possible.

For many enthusiasts, however, this is precisely where the appeal lies. Rather than an extensively restored show car, TSJ 162 presents as an honest and characterful early Cooper which could either be enjoyed in its present form or provide the basis for sympathetic improvement or restoration over time.

With genuine early Mk1 Cooper examples becoming increasingly sought after, its 1962 registration, 997cc specification, long-term previous ownership and accompanying Heritage Trust certificate combine to make this an interesting opportunity for the Mini enthusiast.
