The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 19

1992 Subaru SVX
Styled By Giorgetto Giugiaro

Registration - J822 JKH

Chassis No. - JF1CXWAR0EH002049

M.O.T - January 2023

Odometer - 87,000

Here’s a car you may not have seen before. Designed by master stylist Giorgetto Giugiaro, it marked Subaru’s first foray into the market for luxury performance cars, only 7,000 of which were equipped with righthand drive. This well-presented fourwheel drive example is finished in black over Pearl White, trimmed in black leather, and rides on a set of silver–painted five-spoke alloy wheels. The vendor informs us that its relatively modest indicated mileage of 87,000 is supported by the accompanying maintenance, MOT and ownership histories. He describes the distinctive coupe bodywork as ‘excellent’ and the decidedly deluxe interior as ‘beautiful’, and adds that ‘the performance and ride quality are impressive for a car from the early ‘90s era’. He is now selling the Subaru complete with the aforementioned paperwork, plus a current MOT valid until January 22 of next year. A rare opportunity.

The SVX (marketed as the Alcyone SVX in its native Japan) was a single generation model manufactured by Subaru from 1991 to 1996. Its distinctive design is notable for its ‘window-within-a-window’ side glass configuration, described by the maker as an ‘aircraft inspired glass-to-glass canopy’. The 2+2 coupe was powered by a DOHC 3.3-litre flat-six engine of 231bhp driving through a four-speed automatic gearbox, and was available with either frontwheel or fourwheel-drive. The SVX could sprint from a standstill to 60mph in 7.3 seconds and on to a very respectable top speed of 154mph. The total production run was 24,379 units, 5,884 of which were retained for the Japanese domestic market, with just 2,478 finding their way to Europe.

In summary:

  • An apparently very tidy example of a rare 2+2 coupe
  • The relatively modest mileage is supported by the accompanying documents
  • Impressive specification includes 3.3-litre boxer engine and fourwheel-drive
