The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 38

1962 Daimler SP250 B-Spec
An older-restored, but well presented example. Matching numbers and overdrive transmission

Registration - 495 ELK

Chassis No. - 104010

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 82,364

This fine-looking B specification SP250 is a matching numbers example that was despatched new to Stratstone’s of Mayfair on June 25, 1962, and registered in London to its first keeper just 11 days later. It has remained in the current owner’s hands for the last 10 years and is the subject of an older restoration. It is presented in its original tasteful colour of metallic Mountain Blue, that’s matched to mid blue hide interior trim with dark-blue piping (the factory-fitted upholstery was grey), and dark blue carpets and hood, while the sporty Daimler rides on steel wheels dressed with period-correct stainless trims. The vendor presently classes the V8 engine, overdrive manual gearbox, 2+2 bodywork and upholstery as ‘excellent’ and the paintwork as ‘good’. The SP250 is now being offered complete with factory-fitted heater and demister, Heritage Certificate, original buff log book and a selection of invoices. The odometer currently displays an unwarranted but thoroughly credible total mileage of 82,364.

Daimler launched its boldly designed new sports car at the 1959 New York Auto Show. It was clothed in a tough fibreglass body and built around a traditional cruciform-braced ladder-frame chassis based on that of the Triumph TR3. The newcomer’s original moniker was Dart, but it was hastily rechristened following complaints from Dodge who were already selling a model of that name. By 1960, Daimler was in Jaguar’s hands and the so-called B specification SP250s featured a much stiffer frame, equipped with additional outriggers and a strengthening hoop between the B posts. The C specification model of 1963 brought additional creature comforts. The jewel in the car’s crown was its engine, a silky smooth 2.5-litre V-8 unit designed by Edward Turner. With 140bhp on tap and a low all-up weight, the Daimler’s performance was strong and the sound was one to savour. A total of just 2,654 examples were built between 1959 and 1964, making good ones hard to come by today.

In summary:

  • A very well-presented, matching numbers B specification SP250
  • The subject of an older restoration
  • Comes with overdrive, heater, Heritage Certificate and buff log book
