The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 31

1969 Jensen Interceptor MKI

Registration - ALP 24H

Chassis No. - 115/3406

M.O.T. - June 2023

Odometer - 90,327

Originally liveried in California Sage Green, this handsome Interceptor is nowadays finished in Audi Racing Green and trimmed in black leather. It has never been fully restored, just maintained and repaired as required to keep it running as it should do. The sumptuous interior is apparently completely original, whereas over time the body has been resprayed, the engine rebuilt and, more recently, the gearbox replaced with a reconditioned one. There have only been four owners to date, the first of whom was a Mayfair estate agent. The second retained the Jensen for 26 years before passing it to a dealer who held if for six months before selling it to the vendor in 2005, since when it has never been off the road. He presently classes the automatic transmission, bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the V8 engine and upholstery as ‘good’, and adds that ‘ALP 24H’ ‘starts and runs well with loads of torque and acceleration’. He is now offering the car complete with a number of rare extras (eg ‘cotton reel’ headrests), a full set of owner’s manuals, fire extinguisher, medical kit, jack and toolkit, copy of the build history and large collection of invoices, plus a current MOT valid to June 28 next year.

The Interceptor was unveiled in 1966 and broke several of Jensen’s established traditions in that the design was outsourced – to Carrozzeria Touring – rather than penned in-house, and the bodies were made of steel rather than glass reinforced plastic. The MKI is the rarest of the breed, of which just 1,024 were handbuilt between 1966 and 1969. Its 325bhp 6.3-litre Chrysler V8 engine was claimed by Jensen to result in a 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds and 133mph top speed. Celebrity owners of MKIs have included Sir Henry Cooper, Sir Matt Busby, Tony Curtis and Eric Morecambe.

In summary:

  • A lovely apparently rust-free example that’s remained within the same ownership since 2005
  • Never restored, but maintained and repaired as required
  • Comes complete with such original accessories as fire extinguisher, medical kit etc
