May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 2

1950 Sunbeam Talbot 90
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - FVN 480

Chassis No. - 3021840434

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

Having spotted this charming Sunbeam in an upholsterer’s shop in Wallasey in 2017, the vendor suffered a ‘must have’ moment, and promptly sold his Citroën Light 15 in order to fund the deal. Evidently the car had been the casualty of a domestic dispute and was sold by the then owner’s wife before the workshop could fully complete the refurbishment in progress! There are apparently still a few issues to resolve – eg the bootlid needs to be relocated using the correct hinges and the sunroof would also benefit from refitting. However, the vendor informs us that ‘FVN 480’ ‘is mechanically sound that the engine runs very smoothly’. Finished in Winter Gold and trimmed in red PVC, this venerable Talbot is now seeking a suitably caring new home and, according to Experian Autocheck, has only had four owners to date.

Launched in the summer of 1948, the Sunbeam Talbot 90 replaced the now outmoded 2-litre model and was notable for its new streamlined body with flowing front wings and integral headlamps. The underpinnings were, however, more familiar, the chassis being a wide track version of the pre-war Sunbeam-Talbot Ten one. Power came from a Humber-derived 1944cc OHV four-cylinder unit. This was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox with column-mounted change. Some 4,000 examples of this MKI one version were produced. The 90 was the last model to carry the Sunbeam-Talbot badge: the final version of the line being called simply the Sunbeam MKIII. This range of Talbots enjoyed considerable success in competition – especially on the Monte Carlo Rally where Stirling Moss achieved 2nd overall in a 90 and Per Malling won the 1955 event outright in a MKIII.

In summary:

  • Believed to have had just four owners from new
  • Said to be ‘mechanically sound with smooth-running engine’
  • Only a little more work required to complete the stalled refurbishment
