September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 20

1952 Morgan Plus 4 Drophead Coupe
This rare two-position DHC is believed to have had just two owners from new

Registration - MCD 40

Chassis No. - P2358

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

According to its V5C, this attractive 70-year-old Plus 4 has only had two keepers to date, the most recent of whom acquired it nine years ago. At the time it was in ‘fairly poor condition mechanically’ so has since been treated to a major rebuild, as well as various updates intended to make it more amenable to modern driving conditions. For example, the powerplant was refurbished and converted for the use of unleaded fuel. A replacement clutch was installed and the Moss gearbox rebuilt by specialist Alan Voigts of Liverpool. The radiator was re-cored and the cooling system upgraded to operate as a sealed unit, complete with electric water pump and thermostatically-controlled fan. Other upgrades include a dual circuit braking system, high torque starter motor, alternator, electronic ignition, stainless steel exhaust and a new set of radial tyres. Finished in red over black and trimmed in red leather, ‘MCD 40’ still features its original pneumatic seats and is considered by the vendor to have a ‘good’ engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork and paintwork, and ‘average to good’ upholstery, and the car is said to ‘start and run reliably’. This charming classic Morgan is now being sold complete with history file containing invoices and photos of the restoration.

The original Plus 4 model was introduced at the 1950 Earls Court Motor Show. It was based on a widened, strengthened and longer wheelbase version of the 4/4 chassis and powered by the proven 2088cc straight-four engine of the contemporaneous Standard Vanguard, while the newcomer was especially notable for being the first of the marque to feature hydraulic brakes. The Plus 4 could be ordered in no less than four guises, namely as a two or four-seat sports car or more luxurious two or four-seat drophead coupe. Production continued until 1969, by which time some 4,584 examples had vacated Morgan’s famous Malvern factory.

In summary:

  • The subject of a recent major rebuild
  • Benefits from numerous improvements and upgrades
  • Appears to have had just one former keeper
