May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 20

1969 MGB Roadster

Registration - RKM 625G

Chassis No. - 157118

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This MKII roadster has had seven keepers to date, the most recent of whom has retained it for going on 12 years. He informs us that it has been treated to a complete overhaul, including a respray. It also comes with a brand new mohair hood, as shown in the final photograph. The two-seater is finished in a dark shade of green that’s matched to black interior trim and the car rides on a set of painted wire wheels. The vendor currently views the B Series engine, manual transmission and paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’, and is now offering ‘RKM 625G’ complete with radio/cassette and woodrim steering wheel. The MG will be supplied with V5C registration docuument and various useful small spare parts.

Introduced in the May of 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front, and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Damping was by lever arm units all round. Braking was by discs at the front and drums at the rear. At launch, the model was powered by a three-bearing version of the 1,798 cc B Series engine that produced 95bhp at 5,400 rpm. However, with an eye on superior reliability, this unit was quickly replaced by a five-bearing one. The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators.

In summary:

  • Has benefited from a general overhaul and respray
  • In its current ownership for going on 12 years
  • Comes complete with new yet-to-fitted mohair hood
