The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 20

1987 Ford Sierra XR6
Rare South African import, believed to be one of five in the UK

Registration - D586 UUJ

Chassis No. - PR272729

M.O.T. - April 2023

Odometer - 97,400

An ultra-rare sight on UK roads (‘D586 UUJ’ is thought to be one of only five such examples), the XR6 Sierra derivative was only manufactured by Ford’s plant in Pretoria, South Africa and the righthand drive example on offer was first UK registered as recently as May of this year. Finished in red over black that’s matched to grey interior trim, the smartly-presented five-door hatchback rides on period correct pepperpot alloy wheels. The vendor informs us that the Ford’s Essex V6 engine boasts an uprated Kent camshaft and pair of 38 DGAS Weber carburettors. The car’s comprehensive specification also includes, power steering, stainless steel exhaust system with twin tail pipes, and factory-fitted headlight protectors and tow bar. The car has benefited from a degree of recent maintenance that included the replacement of the brakes, driveshafts and tyres, the refurbishment of the alloy wheels, and an engine service that comprised the insertion of fresh oils, sparking plugs, points and rotor arm. The vendor says that the Sierra ‘drives great, with plenty of low-down torque and good motorway cruising’. Overall, he grades the 3.0-litre engine, five-speed manual gearbox and hatchback bodywork as ‘excellent’, and the lustrous paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. He is now selling the rare Ford complete with its original jack and spare wheel and a current MOT valid to April 28 next year.

Released in the September of 1982, the Ford Sierra was a replacement for the ubiquitous Cortina and its German sibling, the Taunus. As with the Cortina, Ford of South Africa produced a couple of performance Sierras unique to its home market. Never exported by the company, the XR6 and XR8 nevertheless have a global following.

In summary:

  • Smart example of South African-built performance Ford
  • Thought to be one of only five such models in the UK
  • Benefits from an uprated engine and recent maintenance
