  Lot 21

1965 Ford Cortina 1500 Super

Registration - ECD 36C

Chassis No. - BA84ER31306

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer- 68,712

This fine looking Cortina evidently dwelt in South Africa from c.1968 to 1978 and was the subject of a restoration in the early 2000s. The vendor informs us that the two front wings and outer sills were replaced, but that the paintwork is ‘mostly original’, and there is ‘no structural rust’. He currently classes the venerable ‘Kent’ engine as ‘excellent’, the three-speed automatic transmission, bodywork and white over blue paintwork as ‘good’, and the blue vinyl interior trim as ‘average’. A rare reminder of a model that once dominated our roads.

At introduction the Cortina was powered by a 1193cc three-bearing version of the company’s already well-known four-cylinder, OHV ‘Kent’ engine, though the option of a five-bearing 1500cc unit followed within months. Initially the mechanical specification echoed that of the proven Anglia with four-speed manual gearbox, drum brakes all round, MacPherson strut front suspension and live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear, and recirculating ball steering. The chief designer of this ultimately very successful car was the Canadian-American Roy Brown Junior, who ironically also had the disastrous Edsel on his CV. Production of the MK I Cortina ran from 1962 to 1966, when it was replaced by the more rounded MKII.

'A Buyer’s Premium applies to the Hammer Price of this Lot if your bid is successful, as per the following;  Motor Cars 12.5% + VAT (minimum £150 + VAT), Motorcycles and Bicycles 15% + VAT (minimum £100 + VAT); Registration Numbers 15% + VAT (minimum £50 + VAT); Automobilia 15% + VAT (minimum of £5 + VAT).'

Potential buyers should satisfy themselves with the description and condition of each lot prior to sale. Each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ as per the terms and conditions for the auction, buyers are asked to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out the service. Any disputes over descriptions will not be entertained.
