September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 22

1985 Rover SD1 Vitesse
One owner from new, in very original condition

Registration - B973 SAD

Chassis No. - SARRREWZ7CM333382

M.O.T. - November 2022

Odometer - 85,164

According to one source, there are under 3,000 SD1s left in the UK, which makes this very original and presentable manual gearbox example a key member of an endangered species. Finished in black and trimmed in grey velour, it has apparently spent its entire 37 years in the vicinity of Penarth in the Vale of Glamorgan. The vendor presently grades the bodywork as ‘excellent’, the V8 engine and upholstery as ‘good’, and the five-speed manual transmission and paintwork as ‘average’, adding that the ‘body is solid with no rot but some surface rust’. He is now offering ‘B973 SAD’ for sale complete with ‘a superb service history from the old Rover garage in Penarth’, electric sunroof, power steering, radio/cassette player, stainless steel exhaust system, Kumho tyres front and rear that boast plenty of remaining tread, and a current MOT that remains valid to November 28. According to Experian Autocheck, the Vitesse has only had one previous owner and its odometer currently indicates a relatively modest total mileage of 85,164.

Launched on the home market in 1976, the SD1 (code for Specialist Division Number 1) was British Leyland’s (BL) replacement for both the Triumph 2000/2500 and Rover P6, and was largely evolved by the duo that had already conceived the Range Rover – David Bache (design) and Spen King (engineering). Powered by the Buick-designed Rover 3500cc V8 engine, the liftback SD1 offered power and comfort in equal measure and was crowned European Car of the Year in 1977. Sadly, the industrial strife and patchy build quality that afflicted all BL products of the period limited its success, and only c.303,345 examples were ultimately produced.

In summary:

  • An apparently very original low ownership example
  • Has remained in the vicinity of Penarth, Wales throughout its life
  • Comes complete with ‘a superb service history’
