Few production cars capture the optimism and sheer imagination of late-1980s American automotive design quite like the original Pontiac Trans Sport. Even more than three decades after its introduction, it looks remarkably futuristic, with its vast steeply-raked windscreen, short bonnet, dramatic glasshouse and almost concept-car proportions.

Launched for the 1990 model year, the Trans Sport was General Motors’ radical answer to the increasingly popular minivan. Rather than simply producing another conventional people carrier, Pontiac created something intended to look as though it had arrived directly from the future. The result became one of the most instantly recognisable American vehicles of its generation.

This 1990 Trans Sport SE is finished in metallic grey and retains the characteristic styling details which made the model so distinctive. The sharply pointed nose flows almost uninterrupted into the enormous windscreen, while the expansive side glazing, ribbed lower-body treatment and tall vertical rear lamps give the Pontiac a silhouette unlike almost anything else on the road.

Its unusual appearance earned the first-generation Trans Sport and its General Motors relatives the affectionate ‘Dustbuster’ nickname in America, a reference to their resemblance to the contemporary handheld vacuum cleaner. What might once have appeared unconventional has subsequently become an enormously nostalgic piece of 1990s design.

Importantly, this particular example is not currently UK registered. Consequently, any purchaser intending to use the vehicle on UK roads will need to satisfy themselves as to the relevant registration, importation, taxation, compliance and roadworthiness requirements.

The cabin is equally evocative of its era. Finished predominantly in grey, it features a wonderfully unconventional dashboard positioned beneath that vast windscreen, with the instrument binnacle set well forward and a column-mounted automatic transmission selector.

The passenger compartment demonstrates precisely why the American minivan became such an important part of family life. Individual upholstered seats provide a flexible and spacious interior, while the huge glazed area creates an exceptionally light and airy cabin. The photographs show the vehicle retaining its characteristic individual passenger chairs, complete with armrests and period upholstery.

Presented today as an older and largely unmolested example, the Pontiac displays age-related cosmetic wear in keeping with its age. The photographs also show areas of deterioration and wear to some trim and fittings, and prospective purchasers should study the extensive image gallery carefully when assessing its condition.

The engine bay similarly presents in used and unrestored condition, with age-related surface corrosion visible to a number of components. As the vehicle is not UK registered and has no UK MOT, prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves as to its mechanical condition and anticipate any recommissioning or remedial work required before road use.

What makes the Trans Sport particularly appealing today is its extraordinary period character. These were never an everyday sight on British roads, and early examples have become increasingly unusual. It represents a fascinating period when General Motors was prepared to take genuine risks with styling and packaging, creating a family vehicle that looked unlike almost anything which had gone before it.

For the collector of unusual American machinery, the enthusiast with a fondness for 1990s culture or simply somebody wanting something genuinely different, this Pontiac has considerable appeal. A wonderfully eccentric survivor from one of the most adventurous periods of General Motors design, this 1990 Pontiac Trans Sport SE is offered at NO RESERVE.
