Introduced in 1969, the Mini 1275 GT effectively succeeded the Cooper as the sporting model within the Mini range. Combining the larger 1,275cc A-Series engine with the more angular Clubman-style front end designed under Roy Haynes, the 1275 GT developed an identity very much of its own and remained in production until 1980.

This 1979 example therefore dates from towards the end of the model's production and is finished in a particularly vibrant shade of blue. Its sporting character is immediately apparent through the contrasting black 'MINI 1275 GT' lower-body stripes and Minilite-style alloy wheels.

Under the bonnet sits the familiar 1,275cc four-cylinder A-Series engine, driving the front wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. The combination of compact dimensions, low weight and famously entertaining handling helped make the 1275 GT one of the more characterful sporting Minis of its era.

The cabin retains a pleasingly period appearance. Black trim is complemented by distinctive plaid-pattern seat centres, while the driver is presented with the 1275 GT's characteristic three-dial instrument binnacle incorporating speedometer, combined fuel and temperature gauge and rev counter. The odometer currently displays approximately 84,363 miles.

Unlike the centrally mounted speedometer associated with earlier Minis, the 1275 GT's instrumentation was positioned directly ahead of the driver, reflecting the more contemporary approach taken with the Clubman-generation interior.

The photographs show a car that retains plenty of period character rather than presenting as an over-restored example. The engine bay similarly appears straightforward and largely traditional in presentation. A selection of spare components accompanies the car, as pictured.

By the late 1970s the 1275 GT represented a distinctly different interpretation of the sporting Mini from the earlier Cooper models, and surviving examples now provide an increasingly evocative reminder of British motoring during the period.
