The Auto Union Universal is a three door estate version of the Auto Union 1000 from the German conglomerate that would become Audi in 1969. ‘AFW501A’ is a factory right hand drive car that was initially supplied to the South African market before being imported to the UK in 2017. ‘AFW501A’ spent the next two years in a private collection before being acquired the current owner in 2019. ‘AFW501A’ represents an incredibly rare car in the UK with only three others in this specification known of. With a recent full recommissioning completed ‘AFW501A’ is now ready for its next owner. The car is MOT exempt and zero rated for tax based on its Historic Vehicle status so ready to use and enjoy immediately. Offered here with NO RESERVE.
The Auto Union Universal was produced by a conglomerate that would include Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer (hence the four interlocked rings). Volkswagen would take a major stake in the company the year after ‘AFW501A’ was built and the collection of marques would become Audi when it merged with NSU in 1969. ‘AFW501A’ is a fascinating car presenting in three door estate configuration with front, “suicide” doors and an outward opening rear hatch. ‘AFW501A’ presents in a charming two tone livery of pale yellow with a black roof. The front end is particularly distinctive with its oversized lights and the contemporary, Audi A3 “pepper pot” alloys work well here also. The spacious cabin is finished with grey leather and that distinctive estate back is particularly commodious. The paintwork, bodywork and interior are rated as “average to good.”
‘AFW501A’ offers an unconventional mechanical specification to go with those distinctive looks, too. The engine is a 981cc, two-stroke, straight three cylinder unit. Each cylinder has its own individual coil and sets of points, and the original output was around 50bhp. Being a 1963 model, ‘AFW501A’ features the Clean Oil Regulator “Frischölautomatik” or "Lubrimat" system which provides a separate tank and pump for the two-stroke oil. Power is fed to the front wheels via a four-speed manual transmission with a column shift. The current keeper confirms that a recent recommissioning has been performed. This work included cleaning the petrol tank, carburettor and fitment of new fuel lines and filter. The engine has been overhauled, decoked and had a new head gasket fitted. ‘AFW501A’ has also recently had a new exhaust fitted. The engine and electrics are rated “excellent” and the transmission “good.”
