September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 24

1970 Austin Mini Countryman
Fully restored to concours standard

Registration - RFW 214H

Chassis No. - AAWB1271587A

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 93,120

This decidedly handsome late build MKII Countryman has been the subject of a seven-year restoration, the quality of which is self-evident, and it is little surprise that the vendor now classes the 998cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, blue bodywork, grey interior trim and black carpeting as all being in ‘excellent’ condition. The Mini rides on a set of reverse rim Cooper wheels and boasts a quartet of auxiliary driving lights ahead of its standard MKII grille. In view of the rebuild, the total indicated mileage of 93,120 amassed by a total of seven owners is probably of little consequence. ‘RFW 214H’ is surely deserving of a caring new home.

With the reverberations of the 1956-1957 Suez Crisis being felt worldwide, Leonard Lord lost little time in commissioning Alec Issigonis to begin work on a radical small car project. Apart from the constraint of using existing BMC mechanical assemblies, and a brief to house four adults plus their luggage within as small a space as possible, the brilliant Issigonis was given carte blanche. His response was the now legendary Mini. Featuring an ingenious transverse-mounted powertrain (with engine sat atop the gearbox), all-round independent 'rubber cone' suspension, front-wheel drive and compact rack and pinion steering, the newcomer was a packaging masterpiece; not to mention one of the most influential automotive designs ever conceived. The Austin Mini Countryman and Morris Mini Traveller estate versions were built on a slightly longer platform than the saloons. Unlike their big brother, the Morris Minor Traveller, the wood panelling of the Mini estates was decorative rather than structural. Total estate production comprised 108,000 Countrymans and 99,000 Travellers.

In summary:

  • A very well presented example of Austin’s version of the Mini estate
  • The subject of a seven-year restoration
  • Boasts a quartet of auxiliary driving lights
