February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 25

1937 Ford Model 77 Pickup Truck

Registration - NXS642

Chassis No. - 3541404

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 32,000

This wonderfully original lefthand drive pre-war pickup truck was first UK registered in December 2020, having previously formed part of an American museum collection. It is powered by Ford’s 85bhp 3.6-litre (221ci) flathead V8 of the time, and drives through a three-speed manual gearbox. Finished and trimmed in black throughout, it even retains what is thought to be its original wooden flatbed. The vendor classifies the powerplant, transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’, and informs us that the truck ‘runs and drives well’ and should only require a degree of recommissioning to put it back on the road once again. The pleasingly low indicated mileage of 32,903 is believed to be correct. These early American pickups have tremendous cachet and are eagerly sought by UK collectors. ‘NXS 642’ represents a rare opportunity to acquire a slice of unmolested period Americana.

Ford’s line-up for 1937 was primarily a refresh of the outgoing Model 48 range, with the only major change being the option of a 2.2-litre (136ci) engine in addition to the popular 3.6-litre (221ci) flathead V8 unit. It was manufactured or assembled at five plants across America plus one in Bucharest, Romania, and offered in a myriad of body formats including: two-door saloon, 4-door saloon, two-door estate, 4-door woodie, 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible, 2-door van, and 2-door 1-ton pickup truck, as per the flatbed offered here.

In summary:

  • Previously an exhibit in an American museum
  • A rare survivor in delightfully unmolested condition
  • The indicated mileage of 32,903 is believed to be correct
