May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 26

1977 Range Rover Classic Diesel

Registration - OHL 1R

Chassis No. - 35530244D

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 66,000

Classic Range Rovers are keenly sought by enthusiasts the world over these days. Corrosion is the major bugbear but, though clearly in need of cheering up, ‘OHL 1R’ looks to be broadly straight and sound and well worth investing in. The vendor volunteers that the interior trim and headlining would benefit from attention, while the two-door body arguably deserves a respray. However, the vehicle appears complete aside of its side trims and rides on its original wheels shod with a good set of tyres. Rather than Rover’s own 3.5-litre petrol V8 that powered all factory Range Rovers up to 1986, this example nowadays sports a 2.4-litre diesel unit – presumably the Italian made VM powerplant that Land Rover itself offered from 1986 to 1992. The vendor currently classes the transmission, bodywork, paintwork and cream upholstery as ‘average’, and the engine as ‘below average’, and is now offering this worthy 66,000-miler complete with a fresh service and full set of original owner’s manuals, plus a selection of invoices and old MOTs. An increasingly rare opportunity.

Far from competing with the likes of the Ford Bronco that had inspired its creation, the David Bache-penned Range Rover created a whole new genre of go-anywhere vehicles - a heady list that its descendants still top to this day. The model was based around a box section chassis and steel ‘safety frame’ onto which the lightweight outer panels were bolted. Power came from the ubiquitous Rover V8 – initially in 3.5-litre guise. This was connected to a permanent fourwheel drive system for optimum traction – a transfer box offered a full set of high and low gear ratios. Suspension was by long travel coil springs all round and braking was by discs front and rear.

In summary;

  • An apparently very straight, original example
  • Retro-fitted with a 2.4-litre diesel engine
  • Only two owners since 1985 and eight in total
